Past Pupil Don McEntee's book on the Dodder River
13 September 2016

At the recent golf outing we chatted to past pupil Don McEntee and he told us about the book he has recently had published.

This book about the Dodder river tells a very special story about a river which exhibits all the goodness and heartbreak of a child.

The book is available for order from any bookshop or can be ordered direct from Don (Hardback €25)

Don was a Senior Engineer in the design section of the Engineering Department of Dublin City Council and the Dodder was a key aspect of his position for many years.

Don describes the Dodder – as with any other river, having its own unique catchment and other attributes - from as many different viewpoints as possible.

The Poddle - which in essence is a tributary of the Dodder – is also explored. This river, which is now mostly underground, is famous for the Dubh Linn, the peaty pool which formed at its confluence with the river Liffey.

The Dodder can be a gentle flowing river, full of fish, and enhancing many parks on its way to the sea or it can turn into a roaring torrent, flooding houses and ripping up trees even though it has two dams to control it close to the source.

Throughout its history it has provided water to the mills, monasteries and farmers along its route.

The Dodder supplied the City of Dublin with water from the weir at Balrothery from 1244 until 1778.

The Bohernabreena Reservoirs were completed in1886 and their unique role in water supply, millers’ compensation rights and flood control, are a central feature of the book.

Its a great read for those who live near the dodder and will give them a new appreciation into this well-loved river.

Anyone for catching some minnows?
